Pet Holiday: National Pit Bull Awareness Day

National Pit Bull Awareness Day

When: October 27, 2018

Striving to educate so all can appreciate their true, loving nature, National Pit Bull Awareness Day (NPBAD) has made great strides toward repairing the unfairly tarnished image of dogs who so often find themselves hounded by the public’s misconceptions.

Fondly nicknamed “America’s Dog,” the pit bull holds a place of honor in history as faithful companions (Helen Keller and President Woodrow Wilson are among the many prominent figures who welcomed pit bull terriers into their hearts and homes) and symbols of national loyalty.

In recent years, however, the reputation of so-called bully breeds has been damaged due to dog fighting, unwilling affiliation with gangs and irresponsible guardianship. Sadly, many locations have responded with Breed Specific Legislation (BSL) outlawing pit bulls and pit bull-type dogs.

To change people’s perspectives, National Pit Bull Awareness Day was established in 2007 by the founder of the Middle Tennessee rescue organization Bless the Bullys. Held each October on a date determined annually, people across the country with a passion for compassion can show their support for the paws cause by attending a gathering in their local area.
